I downloaded all of the Portal parts and put them into a "Portal" folder.
I extracted part 1 with WinRar.
After going through the extracted folder, I found a batch file named PLAY_PoRtAL.
I double-clicked that batch file, and command prompt came up with a message that basically said "Starting Game."

A gray window came up, and I could hear sounds, but nothing was happening. A few seconds later, my computer crashed.

I only extracted the first part, so this may be the problem.
Also, all of the other parts are named the same thing, and want to over-write the first one.

How can I get Portal to work?

I found what the problem was.

I had to run it in windowed-mode, not fullscreen.
