Command and Conquer Generals Help

I downloaded command and conquer generals, after ddownloading i extracted it and put the password using copy paste, after extraction i open the folder and run the setup(windows batch file) and extraction was completed, then i double clicked the generals.exe the start up screen open, then my screen turned gray then the application closed and a pop up box open its written there ( a serious problem has occured) . What will i do to fix the problem and play with generals??
Please Help Me>

PS: i Use Vista

Upgrade ur graphic card drivers

re-install the game

lastly, if above two methods fail-try to run in compatibility mode with XP
